RECOMMENDATION(S):

Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee, Environmental Health Director, to submit funding application #28-827 to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, in an amount not to exceed $2,500 for the Contra Costa Environmental Health Retail Food Program, for the period from July 15, 2011 through July 15, 2012.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Approval of this application will result in an amount not to exceed $2,500 from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the Environmental Health Retail Food Program through July 15, 2012. No County match required.

BACKGROUND:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have chosen to grant funds to Contra Costa County’s Environmental Health Division to conduct an assessment, and audit of the retail food program in Contra Costa County. This project is solely for the Environmental Health Division with regards to the retail food program, inspections, organization, training, and standardization of Environmental Health staff, how to enhance the internal program, and be consistent with Federal standards and promote uniformity. The goal of this project is to complete a self-assessment and audit of the retail food program in Contra Costa County.


CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this application is not approved, the Environmental Health Division will not receive funds to meet the requirements in order to promote a food inspection program that keeps our community safe.
